THREAD VEINS OR ‘SPIDER VEINS’ ARE SMALL UNSIGHTLY BLOOD VESSELS CLOSE TO THE SURFACE OF THE SKIN THAT ARE RED, BLUE, OR PURPLE IN COLOUR.

Thread veins are commonly caused by hormonal changes and pregnancy, however in many instances they are “familial”. They are also frequently seen in conjunction with or after treatment of varicose veins.

Thread veins can spread to cover large areas of skin, marking it with unappealing jagged lines that can undermine a person’s confidence, especially when considering beachwear or underwear. Microsclerotherapy targets and eliminates these veins, leaving you with a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

MICROSCLEROTHERAPY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Microsclerotherapy is the precise injection of a chemical called sclerosant into the thread vein, irritating its inner wall. The veins become inflamed, the inner walls stick together, and the vein collapses. The now redundant veins are absorbed and expelled by the body.

  • The number of treatments needed depends on the extent of the thread veins. Multiple injections are performed at each session, however it is normal to need at least 2 usually 3 sessions. We will discuss your treatment plan and assess the number of sessions that will be needed during your initial consultation.

  • Microsclerotherapy is not suitable for the following people:

    • Currently taking combined oral contraception (relative contraindication)
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Experiencing acute inflammation in the vein to be treated
    • A history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
    • An allergy to sodium tetradecyl sulphate or fibrovein (the sclerosant)
    • A skin infection in the treatment area
    • Diabetes that is not under control
    • Heart disease, kidney disease, or arterial disease
    • Varicose veins that require surgery
    • Currently on blood-thinning medication such as Warfarin
    • Microsclerotherapy is only suitable for the treatment of thread veins on the legs; vessels on the face MUST NEVER be treated with sclerotherapy techniques due to the risk of necrosis and skin loss.
  • A course of injection treatments, 6-8 weeks apart is recommended. The number of treatments will be determined during your consultation however is usually 3. Improvement continues to be seen up to a year after the last treatment. You will be provided with some compression stockings at the time of your first treatment; these are important and should be worn as much as possible for the first week after treatment.

  • The injections can produce a slight stinging sensation, but the needles used are extremely fine and most clients say any pain is minimal. Some clients feel a burning sensation shortly after the treatment, but this only lasts for a few seconds.

    • Walk around or perform gentle exercises for a few minutes several times a day to keep the blood flowing.
    • Wear compression stockings as advised.
    • Don’t wax or shave the treated area for two weeks.
    • Steer clear of hot baths for two weeks and avoid scrubbing the treated area.
    • Avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks.
    • Don’t pick at the healing skin of the treated area.
